Original Hand-Painted Photo by Katie Cooney
A one-of-a-kind photograph of pears, printed by the photographer on fiber-based paper and then hand-colored with fine oil paints. Photographer and artist Katie Cooney specializes in hand-painted photographs -- "combining two types of art that I love into one thing." Cooney uses a Hasselblad, all-manual camera to take still-life photographs against a black backdrop, then gets her negatives developed in Palo Alto and heads to a darkroom in San Francisco to print them herself. Once printed, the black and white photographs are hung to drip-dry. When they are dry, she is ready to paint. Cooney uses “cotton, not brushes" to apply the oil paints to create depth and shadows.

Dancing Tulips - a Photograph by Yao-pi Hsu
Photography artist Yao-pi Hsu says, "Flowers are one of the best gifts from mother nature.  The different colors, shapes, forms and textures from flowers never cease to amaze me. Flowers are my favorite photo subject. I remind myself to stop and smell flowers along the side walk."  In this lovely photograph, especially selected for Kara's Spring Thing 2010: The Secret Garden, we see tulips - one of the glories of springtime - back lit to highlight a nearly transparent spectrum of rose hues.

Black & White Photograph - "The Cloisters, Gloucester Cathedral"
From fine art photographer John Eaton's "English Cathedrals Abbey's Portfolio," a 24" x 34" framed and matted archival pigment ink print of "The Cloisters at Gloucester Cathedral." Like all medieval cathedrals, Gloucester Cathedral was built to awe the faithful into an ecstatic vision of the City of God. The Cloisters of Gloucester Cathedral are magnificent, early examples of fan vaults: radiating, intricately boned tracery and branches on all sides. Aficionados of Harry Potter will recognize these cloisters from the Potter movies, but John Eaton's photograph transports us back to the 14th century when prayerful monks studied, prayed and walked in these sublime halls.

"Young Girl" - Original Painting by Terenia Offenbacker
Local artist Terenia Offenbacker chose "Young Girl," a portrait in acrylics, for Kara's auction specifically because of the haunting expression on the subject's face.  Is she remembering a loss?  What is the story behind the serious expression on this young woman's face?  This work reflects the free expression that anchors Terenia's work.  She does not begin with a specific concept, but rather lets the story of the painting reveal itself as she works.

Blue Clay and Aluminum Sculpture by Harriet Helfricht
Artist Harriet Helfricht grew up in the old and magnificent East German city of Dresden amidst the ghosts of centuries of art, architectural and historic treasures destroyed in WWII.  When she moved to California she had the opportunity to focus her life on the beautiful and challenging world of art where she says, “Extensive interactions between different expressions like power, beauty, perfection and fragileness of the human body are focal points of my work. As I often use my fingers directly as tools for my sculptures and paintings I can directly transfer my feelings into my work.” Working with clay and aluminum Harriet has created a lithe, linear sculpture in deep blue – strong yet fragile, modern yet timeless.
