The modern bikini was introduced in 1946. The bikini was named after the island Bikini Atoll, where the U.S. military was testing its bombs in World War II. Its creator, Louis Réard, believed the revealing suit would create a shock like that of the atomic bomb.



The hit song "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini," inspired by this scandalous swimwear, was #8 on the UK Singles Chart in 1960.



The contemporary stiletto was invented in the 1950s by Italian shoe designer Salvatore Ferragamo, who made his first pair for Marilyn Monroe.




Elvis Presley returned to civilian life in March 1960, after spending two years away in the U.S. Army. Below, he performs his hit "Hound Dog" in 1956.



The Muppets are a group of puppet characters created in 1955 by Jim Henson. A new movie based on the popular series is now in theaters.

The hit song "Yakety Yak" performed by The Coasters spent a week at #1 on the Hot 100 Pop List and seven weeks at #1 on the R&B charts.
