Kara is an organization that has been near and dear to me since I was a child.
After my mom died from lung cancer when I was 9, I was lucky enough to come to Kara and join a peer support group for children who had lost a parent. I remember that group being filled with kids I could relate to and warm, supportive adults.

Years later, I remember seeing Kara staff on my high school campus, after the suicides of two of my classmates.

In college, I had the opportunity to get credit for an internship, and that's when I came back to Kara as a volunteer in the Youth and Family program. I began working with the sudden loss group filled with the tiniest, cutest children whose parents have died without warning (i.e. homicide, accident or suicide). We start off every meeting in the same way: with our name, the person who died and how they passed. “My name is Meridith, and my mom Marianna died of lung cancer.” Every meeting I am reminded that such an exercise is just enough for these little ones, as it was for me after my mom died.

For the past 5 years, I've been with Kara facilitating the sudden loss group, as well as a camp counselor at Kara's Camp Erin, working with six- to eight-year-old girls.
I'm now enrolled in a Marriage and Family Therapy program at Santa Clara University, with the intention of continuing my work with children, and specializing in grief and loss.

This organization has been a blessing for me as it is for so many other adults and children. Your support of Kara allows for volunteers like me to be trained, and the opportunity for families and individuals to receive counseling for no cost at all.

No donation is too small, thank you!
