In August 2009, at the age of 56, Christopher Behney Moore died of complications from Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome caused by the H1N1 (Swine) flu.
Christopher's memory and teaching live on through the students at University of Toledo Medical School who study the medical and personal aspects of his case in their medical ethics class. Who knows how many H1N1 victims were saved by the development of the new protocol for treating the H1N1 flu that the Stanford doctors developed after working with Christopher?
But quite simply, Christopher's daughters, granddaughters, family, friends, and I miss the light, kindness, wisdom, intellect, care, laughter, and fun that he brought during his short time with us.
To quote Shakespeare, "Grief hath changed me since I saw you last."
I'm walking with Kara on October 6th not only to remember Christopher, but also to give back to an organization which I literally credit with giving me my life back.
From those early and confusing days of losing my Christopher, and continuing for close to 18 months, Kara provided me with free one-on-one peer counseling by a woman who had experienced a loss similar to mine. They referred me to a young widows group, where I learned that, while my situation was indeed tragic, I certainly did not have the monopoly on catastrophe, sadness, and loss. Ever so slowly, I began to get better.
I'm a different person since that August day, and today I lead a life that is richer, fuller, and more meaningful than ever before. It was through Kara that I learned to live with my loss, move forward, and begin the arduous task of rebuilding my life.
This walk is a fun way to honor and remember Christopher as well as a way to raise financial and public support for Kara.
You can join me in this walk by a financial contribution to Kara or by walking with me. For any and all support, I am most grateful!
